Ludwig Stage I: A widening of the division of bare scalp between areas of combed hair ('part', 'parting') may be the first complaint of the female patient.  She will also notice her ponytail diameter may be reduced one-third to one-half of what it used to be.   The elastic band that she usually uses to tie up her ponytail can now be wound several times around her hair in contrast to only once or twice, as before.
