Squamous Cell Carcinoma
  • usually begins as a pink, scaling patch on areas of maximal sun exposure
    • patch limited to epidermis is called actinic keratosis
  • actinic keratoses and squamous carcinoma in-situ (Bowen’s Disease) are pre-cancers
  • treatment options for actinic keratoses include:
    • liquid nitrogen cryotherapy
    • topical 5-Fluorouracil
  • actinic keratosis
    • left untreated can evolve into invasive squamous cell carcinoma
  • squamous cell carcinoma
    • manifested clinically as a hard pink or white nodule
    • often surrounded by the typical scaling of an actinic keratosis
    • is particularly significant in that systemic spread, particularly to lymph nodes, can occur in some cases
  • treatment of squamous carcinoma limited to the skin is
    • surgical excision
    • radiation therapy
